How SkillsTX and SFIA help me excel in my role

Introduction

I started working as a Customer Success Manager at SkillsTX in June 2022. Using the SkillsTX platform to assess my current skills and compare them against the required skills for my job has helped me create a focused development action plan. As I enter my sixth month in this role, I am already at 75% skills match and continually developing to reach my full potential.

I have been reflecting on my achievement - what has helped my performance in terms of environment and actions. And I can summarize this in the following hierarchical order, which has guided me here:

  1. Expectations
  2. Leadership
  3. Belong
  4. Growth
  5. Measure

(The above steps are inspired from Marcus Buckingham's and Curt Coffman's Book - first, break all the rules).

1. Expectations: having a clear set of expectations gives clarity and helps plan my work. And this also includes what the company provides to help me achieve the expectations.

2. Leadership: having leaders who support you and care about your success speeds up the process of converting the skills into performance connected to the set expectations. And in my case, I have been fortunate to have great leaders and mentors around me that have helped me in this journey.

3. Belong: a sense of belongingness comes from trust and alignment in the values and mission. When I turn up at work, I know the importance of my role to the company's success and mission.

4. Growth: I have frequently shared this with my peers and colleagues. Never go for a job where you know 100% - I excel when I see a win-win the company grows when I grow, and vice-versa. And this is where I find gems of development opportunities and learning new skills.

5. Measure: If you can't measure it, it doesn't exist, and you cannot improve it. Hence, knowing at which point I started and how far I have come helped me detect my skills and create a focused development action plan. But, on the other hand, if you do not have the right tool to measure, you may end up crashing just like Disaster off the Scilly Isles.

Since I started at SkillsTX, I have been using the SFIA framework with the help of the SkillsTX tool to measure my skills and create a direction for my development plans. And this has helped me coach my clients to adopt SFIA individually, as a team, and at an organizational level.
